The third edition already!

Freely downloadable online, http://www.quantifica.fr/mapafrica.aspxQuantifica has just published the third edition of the Observatory of Telecommunications in Africa and Middle East. Directed with the initial support and very active Maroc Telecom and Tera Consultant, this Observatory, with over 30 000 data, fills a lack of information concerning this region. Organised by country factsheets information is presented by graphs, available in English and in French, with a standard format which varies according to available data

Besides the general macroeconomic information, each country factsheets describe:

The landline telephony market (number of subscribers, penetration, residential and business segmentation, subscriber base growth rate, outbound and inbound traffic, market revenues and Arpu).

The mobile telephony market (number of subscribers, mobile telephony market subscriber base growth rate, penetration, outbound and inbound traffic, list of telecoms mobile operator and operator market share, revenues, Arpu.)

The Internet market (number of internet connections and subscriptions.

A list of tariffs (prepaid and post-paid mobile, landline and Internet).

A regulation framework that gathers several variables (partial or total unbundling, VoIP, numbering plan, number portability) and the telecommunications sector prospects by country.

It is already the reference for all professionals interested in telecoms on the continent...

Mobile, still the driving force of growth…

Following the rest of the world, but even more stressed, mobile telephony drives the market with an increase of 66 million subscribers in 2008. On December, 31st, 2007, the total number of customers to mobile services was 264 million, against 201 million on December 31st 2006. On average, at end 2007, in Africa, 28 inhabitants over 100 have a SIM card, against only 22 in 2006, which is an increase of 30%.

… Revenues climbing…

Overall, QUANTIFICA estimates the telecommunication revenues in Africa at $ 50 billion dollars for the year 2007, an increase of 13,7% over the previous year.

…drawn by transnational groups…

Just like what is happening on other continents, Africa has seen the emergence of transnational groups, this is to say operating in more than one country of the continent. These operators are contributing significantly to the telecoms dynamic of the African continent by their participation or acquisition of licences, and these five first groups reckon more that 303 million mobile customers.

Quantifica also sells data in Excel format.
