The addition of a third operator, plus the general expansion in 3G services, will lead to a mobile internet growth boom in 2010. This is the opinion of Moroccan mobile commerce firm Maroc Telecommerce, which says it is anticipating a 250% increase in e-commerce turnover, according to Magharebia. BMI does not forecast for e-commerce, but we do agree that increased competition and a greater focus on 3G as a growth driver should boost the mobile market in general and mobile broadband in particular in 2010.At the end of 2009 there were 25.311mn mobile subscribers in Morocco, served by the two active mobile operators, incumbent Maroc Telecom, which had a 60% market share at the end of the year, with 15.272mn mobile subscribers, and Meditel, with a 40% market share.
Both operators enjoyed modest growth throughout 2009, with the market as a whole expanding by 14.2%. Both operators are now facing a new challenge. In February 2010 Wana launched commercially as a national GSM operator, including 3G services. It is in some ways an unusual situation because Wana was already active in Morocco, offering a range of fixed-wireless services over a CDMA platform, including a range of prepaid services advertised as a kind of mobile service, as they did offer limited mobility. However, it is a different ball game now that Wana has full mobility, as well as being on the more popular GSM platform, leading to a much wider range of available handsets. Wana has to a degree focused on value in the past, so BMI would not be surprised to see something of a price war in the coming months.
A third 3G operator should have an impact on the market. 3G grew impressively in 2009, mostly due to expansion of available services. Maroc Telecom reports year-on-year growth of more than 480% in its 3G subscriber base, ending 2009 with 174,000 3G subscribers.Morocco's telecoms regulator also reports a massive expansion in the number of 3G subscribers in 2009. In fact, with ADSL subscriber figures actually falling slightly, it seems that 3G is already the driving force behind broadband growth, and the entrance of Wana as a fully mobile operator with a greater range of products, and more investment from the other operators, should see this trend continuing into 2010.
